The Championships fortnight · July 2026
When Wimbledon came to Sutton
Every July, the tennis world lands on our doorstep. This year, between matches at the All England Club, two tour players found their way south of the courts to a little bistro on Sutton High Street.

Doubles player Gonzalo Escobar sat down for dinner during the tournament without any of us knowing who he was. He ordered from the evening set menu, ate, and then came to find Ankur.
“It's so difficult to find food like this in London.”
“When Escobar came, he sat down and had food — I didn't even know he was a player,” Ankur told the paper. “He spoke to me after and said our food had uplifted him. He was so humble, and we took pictures with him.”
He wasn't the only one. Jessica Failla, over from the United States for the Championships, stopped by during the fortnight too — and left with an iced coffee and a photo with the team.
For a bistro built almost entirely on word of mouth, a fortnight like this one means a lot. As Ankur put it: “It was amazing, because we really do love what we do.”
“Wimbledon star's surprise visit puts Sutton's LA Café firmly in the spotlight”
